DallasAnna Pedford would not have graduated from college if she had followed the advice of the doubters.
Rather, her journey led her to the University of North Texas at Dallas, where she recently earned a psychology degree.
When Pedford said, “The Lord is directing my path,” “I would have never thought from 1963 when I entered Texas Southern University and begged my parents to come home.”
After returning home, Pedford secured a position with with&T, which was then known as Southwestern Bell, and subsequently landed a position at Dallas ISD, where she continues to serve as a substitute teacher. Nevertheless, she had no intention of attending college when she departed Texas Southern.
“I believed I was finished. “No way,” answered Pedford. “It was just fate that my door stopped right in front of the door of El Centro.”
Along the way, Pedford would become a mother and a grandmother while obtaining an associate’s degree from Mountain View College.
Dr. Warren Von Eschenbach, president of the university, described Pedford as an inspiration.
When Von Eschenbach said, “It was really an inspiration when she came across the stage,” “I had the pleasure of taking a photo with her and all the graduates, and she got the standing ovation she deserved.”
According to Pedford, she aspires to inspire others.
“I have this passion for learning and I always say that if I have dementia or Alzheimer’s it’ll have to catch me at the grocery store, shopping center or university,” she stated. “I won’t let them enjoy the fact that I’m at home and you’re focusing on me and confusing me. God doesn’t want me to do that.
